South Carolina in Washington

I was at a conference last week in Washington, DC and much to my surprise there was not one but two South Carolina connections at the hotel and conference center. Here are pictures from the hotel of two famous South Carolinians. Be on the lookout as you travel and document your own SC findings!

Angelica Van Buren

The Presidential Walk featured portraits of presidents and first ladies. Born in Wedgefield, SC, Angelica Van Buren served as first lady of the United States when she married Abraham Van Buren while his father, Martin Van Buren, was the eighth President of the United States.

Francis Lewis Cardozo

One of the meeting rooms was named after Francis Lewis Cardozo, the first African American to hold a statewide office in the United States. He was SC’s secretary of state in 1868 and later worked for the US Treasury Department.
