(1902-2003) Born in Edgefield, SC, Strom Thurmond was a governor of South Carolina from 1947-1951 and the oldest and 2nd longest-serving U.S. Senator. Strom Thurmond also is known for the longest filibuster in the legislature, speaking for 24 hours and 18 minutes nonstop in opposition to the Civil Rights Act of 1957.
